YOGA FUNDAMENTALS

This pre-registered class is for those students who are beginning yoga or deepening their fundamental practice. It is suitable to students working with physical challenges, as we progress slowly and individually through the primary Yoga asanas.  Though all of our classes at RYA pay close attention to structure and offer individual attention, this class is more workshop and instruction oriented that the regular drop-in class.  Some of the subjects covered in this class are

  • The centrality of breath, articulation of the spine
  • Introduction to pelvic girdle
  • Introduction to shoulder girdle
  • Femoral Grounding
  • Basic Standing Postures
  • The structure and necessity of back bending
  • Twisting – flesh, bones, organs
  • The principles of forward bending

RESTORATIVE YOGA WITH JENNA

This class is ideal for the student recovering from short or long-term injuries, or the student who is managing a medical condition.  It’s also a great class for every yoga student who just wants to relax, be still, and let the body find its own suppleness and peace.  The postures are adjusted to your individual needs.  The class will principally employ restorative asanas, making use of props such as blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters and wedges to passively put the body in position to receive the full healing power of the posture.  A typical class will utilize only ten postures, permitting students to let their breathing help gravity deeply open stubborn areas of tension or long-term pain.  Those suffering from fibromyalgia, CFS, Lupus, and insomnia and tension have found it to be very beneficial.

We sometimes end this class with the practice of Yoga Nidra, a profound relaxation meditation that allows for the complete pause of one’s identification to both body and mind, so that the eternal qualities of life itself may become luminous.

Wednesday 7:30 - 9pm.

Drop in rate: $18.  5 class pass: $17 x 5.  10 class pass: $16 x 10

hst included.

Designed for beginners, yet steeped in the fundamental technique that can sharpen the practice of even an experienced yogi, Level One will both soothe and strengthen. We’ll work on joint mobility, range of movement, basic standing and sitting postures, while emphasizing structural alignment and the freedom of breath.  The physical and geometric approach of this class consists of outer alignment in accordance with accepted anatomical concepts of how the body wants to carry itself. For every individual allowances are made to accommodate any differences between the left and the right sides, as well as any pain resulting from stiffness, weakness and injury.  Fundamental ideas such as femoral and humeral grounding are covered, as well as the basis for liberated breathing.  Level One classes are completely suitable for more advanced practitioners.  Far from being “easy”, they will allow you to apply yourself more deeply to fundamental postural technique.

ECO-RESTORATIVE

Here is a simple premise: If we truly inhabit our bodies, which, far from being autonomous are a changeful dialogue between the internal world and the external world, we would never harm the environment which sustains us.  In an age of technological alienation, where Nature herself is endangered by our way of life, Yoga, in the light of Ecology, becomes a transformative and radical act. This two hour restorative yoga class, framed by the teachings of naturalists and ecologists Muir and Thoreau and Emerson and others, is designed to take the student through a full-body contemplation of the self in relation and dependence on Nature.

$30 plus hst per class.

LEVEL TWO: DEEP STRUCTURE

This more rigorous class in classical Hatha technique covers all movements and postures that are key to the three pillars of flexibility, strength, and balance.  Emphasis will be placed on the perfecting of skeletal alignment, the release of the visceral body, straightening of the channels and relaxing of the kidneys, spacial awareness and the balancing of the doshas.  We will work within the language and understanding of ayurvedic principles.  Classical Sun salutations as well as variations in vinyasa punctuate the balance of postures and instruction.  Includes inversions and arm balancing.
