Private postural instruction allows a qualified
Yoga Instructor or Therapist to assess your
unique structure and its challenges, taking into
account asymmetries and chronic gripping
patterns caused by injury, habit, or birth.
With experienced eyes focused upon your every
movement and reading your bone positions, any
lack of mobility, stability, or proper breathing
becomes readily apparent. Your
instructor's role is to observe these details
closely, and to draw both particular and general
conclusions about how your postural improvement
might proceed. From these conclusions, you
will be assigned postures or vinyasas (sequences
of postures) for home practice.
Typically, students of all levels find private
instruction very helpful. The beginner,
especially one who is approaching postural Yoga
with a history of injuries or chronic
discomfort, can deeply benefit from an initial
private lesson, in order to understand what
classroom Yoga will request of their body, and
how best to meet the challenge by setting
appropriate limits. Advanced students,
meanwhile, can use their private instruction to
perfect the details of their asana experience,
as well as to establish appropriate attitudes
towards the level of effort applied. This
is especially important in the prevention of
injury as practice progresses.
Inevitably, postural improvement is interlinked
with dietary and lifestyle practices.
Discussion of these factors might well play a
part in your private instruction. It may
be appropriate, for instance, to discuss your
work habits, driving posture, and exercise
patterns, to see if you are exacerbating your
postural issues. You also might be invited
to try the traditional herbs that have been indicated
for muscle softness and ligament strength for
thousands of years. These preparations are
available in our Herbal Shop.
A private asana
lesson does not normally consist of the student
being led through a class-like series of
postures, although this is sometimes helpful.
It is generally much more beneficial for the
student to consider it as a learning workshop,
and to come prepared with questions and a
notebook.
