Info on Ayurvedic Psychotherapy

Matthew provides Ayurvedic Consultation and Yoga Therapy on a private basis to those who are seeking to resolve long-term health challenges, those who are recovering from injuries, and those who desire to further their spiritual evolution.  He makes use of the traditional methods of Eightfold Diagnosis, questioning, Ayurvedic Psychotherapy, and investigation of the Ayurvedic astrology (from the East Indian system) with particular focus on the unfolding karma of health and vitality.

Rates and Policies:

Ayurvedic Consultation and Yoga Therapy is the application of time-honored  techniques to wellness, healing, and personal transformation. This individualized process evaluates all appropriate aspects of your life circumstance and draws on the full depth of the Ayurvedic and Yogic traditions to help you nourish your physical, mental, and emotional needs. As well as being able to offer holistic treatment regimes for specific challenges such as diabetes, asthma, and auto-immune disorders, Ayurveda  and Yoga Therapy can manage or relieve chronic pain caused by general muscular tension, mental confusion, and emotional stress.

Testimonials

Your protocol is typically structured around 2 private consultation/instructional meetings, spaced a week apart. Your unique Ayurvedic constitution, structural condition, illness patterns, injury history, dietary habits, and life goals will be assessed and analyzed.  Then, Matthew will build a personalized home-study program that may include some or all of the following: dietary and herbal suggestions, asanas (body liberation), pranayama (breath liberation), sleep-enhancement practices, yama/niyama (personal and social integrity), and meditation (mind liberation), along with the tools you will need to retain this discipline of self-discovery.

Rates and Policies:

An important thing to bear in mind is that Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga Therapy generally works from the gross to the subtle.  Briefly, this means that primary aggravating factors must always be addressed first.  Postural, dietary, herbal, and meditative therapies will only really begin to work when the most basic needs of physical and emotional health are satisfied.

This pattern may sometimes appear in reverse.  For example, if you would like to lose weight, we will obviously analyze your relationship to food and exercise patterns.  However, if there is emotional stress or sorrow in your life, this will most likely need to be addressed first, as it is virtually impossible to lose weight under stress.  If you are living with a cancer diagnosis, we will obviously look at your diet, the appropriateness of herbs, breath enhancement, and meditation.  But if there is some underlying grief, bitterness, or anger, these will most likely have to be raised to inquiry in order to proceed, because they often lie at the heart of complex disease conditions.

Testimonials

In short, we can say: you can't expect herbs to help you if your diet is unbalanced; you can't expect your sleep to improve if you're overworked or using caffeine; you can't expect meditation to help you if your basic mental environment is compromised.  Every client of Ayurveda  and Yoga Therapy should understand that it is the whole person within their whole circumstance who is receiving treatment.

Every client of will receive some or all of the following tools:

  • a general prakriti (constitutional) assessment, employing many diagnostic techniques such as pulse and tongue analysis
  • dietary evaluation and suggestions, including possible herbal therapies
  • physical postures appropriate to your build and condition
  • breathing exercises for home practice
  • personalized contemplation/meditation homework
  • training in nasal irrigation (sinus cleansing)
  • guidance in establishing your dinacharya (daily routine), and planning for seasonal cleansing
  • written assignments to help retain your learning
  • instruction in personal ritual, according to the Vedic traditions

You can view a sample of the kind of protocol that is provided for all clients here.

Our rates and policies are as follows:

  • 2 sessions (90 minutes each), $275, includes full typewritten personalized programme.  This is ideal for those with several lifestyle/dietary/emotional symptomologies they would like to improve.  The first session is exploratory, and then the second session involves receiving a typewritten programme of Ayurvedic self-renewal featuring lifestyle/dietary/herbal suggestions.  During the implementation of these practices, full e-mail support is offered.
  • Ayurvedic Psychotherapy: 10 1-hour sessions, $700 plus gst
  • follow-up sessions are assessed at $80 per hour, or part thereof (minimum 30 minutes)
  • it is our policy to try to be creative in accepting payment from those in need by means of trade, or work-study
  • it is preferable that fees be paid online, as RYA has no office staff -- it is better to keep the money out of the consultation process

Natural change, supported by learning and practice, comes at a slow and steady pace.  A first consultation may help you notice obvious imbalances, but usually three or more appointments are necessary to begin to absorb the experiential learning requested of the student of Ayurveda and Yoga.  It should be noted that the treatments prescribed by these traditions are often exploratory in nature, and require consistent application and self-observation to achieve the kind of lasting results that indicate progress in the evolution of body, mind, and spirit.  This gives you, as the client, certain responsibilities, which are detailed in our Informed Consent and Client Agreement.

If you have further questions about whether or not Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic Consultation is right for you, you may fill out our inquiry form.  We will do our best to respond within 24 hours.

Below you'll find testimonials from past clients.  You should also view our Library of Articles for more information on perspectives and practices.

IMPORTANT NOTE #1: Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic consultation focus upon overall quality of life, which makes its statistical assessment nearly impossible.  As an experiential therapy of self-realization, it cannot be taken into the lab and administered in controlled settings.  The reason for this is simple: there are no controls for the human mind, which, according to Ayurveda, is the central causative factor in disease.  Naturally, therefore, the claims of the tradition, and by extension those claims implied by this website, have not been evaluated by Health Canada or the FDA, and are not intended to supplant the advice and care of licensed medical doctors in the allopathic tradition.

IMPORTANT NOTE #2:  Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic consultations may be cancelled up to 48 hours in advance for a refund, less a booking fee of $15.  This programme is meant to be regular in application, and cumulative in effect.  To honor these requirements, the full 5-consultation programme should take place over no more than a 10-week period.  Any cancelled appointment will have to be rescheduled within one week of its original time, or it will be forfeited.

Testimonials

If I were to sum everything up, I think the most wonderful aspect of meeting with you has been the greater internal acceptance I've felt as a result. Ayurveda seems to put even more puzzle pieces into place for me. My digestion has improved significantly, my skin troubles (rosacea & excema) have all but cleared up, years of insomnia are behind me - and I feel as though I understand how to maintain these lovely new patterns without having to be rigid about them. You are a wonderful guide, Matthew. Your ability to read me at our first meeting astounded me, and I continue to appreciate your counsel and advice.

I'd also say that I don't think I'd have gone off the pill had I not felt the incredible effects of the cleanse we did this year. Indeed, I think it was a moment of samadhi, honouring my body, spirit, and mind, that led me to be able the courage to do that. That would not have happened without our work together.  And I even have one more thing to add:  This is the first time in 8 years that I haven't experienced seasonal allergies.  It suddenly occurred to me last week that I haven't had any symptoms this season - simply amazing!  No runny nose, no itchy eyes, no lumpy bumpy skin - amazing!

"After I initially finished my time with you and with the Yoga therapy I felt
like it had "changed my life" and changed my outlook on my life. I felt
extremely connected to my body and knowing of what was going on inside it.
I still feel that I am more aware of exactly what it going on. From the
foods I eat, to exercise, to the energies around it- I have found I am a
better listener and 'understander-er' of what it feels. The other biggest
impression and thing I learned from the Yoga therapy was the process and
honor of breathing. I feel so much more alive because I am using it to the
potential and more aware of the three basic parts of expansion-inhalation
and exhalation." -- Ellana Kelter

We have been telling people how much the yoga has helped Dick.  He thinks he won't need back surgery. Isn't that just wonderful!  Thanks again for all you have done for us. It was the best 90 dollars we have ever spent. -- Jan and Richard Gates

You were clear, professional and very, very human with me at all times. -- Mike Irwin, MATC

"I highly recommend your class to anyone in my situation. My illness was my motivation and in the transition from "old habits" to a completely different life and life-style, your emphasis and patience and perseverance encourages me to continue." -- a breast cancer survivor
